What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It was discovered by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words – Rei and Ki. Rei means universal and Ki means life force energy. On a more spiritual note Reiki can be described as spiritually guided life force energy or Rei = God-Consciousness and Ki = life force energy.

Reiki is not taught in the way other healing techniques are taught. The ability to perform the healing art is transferred from a Reiki Master to the student during a process called an “attunement”. During the attunement, the student’s chakras and energy pathways are adjusted to accommodate the ability to channel the Reiki energy and the student is linked to the Reiki source. The attunement process is guided from the Higher Power, where the Reiki energy originates from. The Reiki attunement can also act as a cleansing process that affects the entire body….physically, mentally and emotionally. This will enable the student to be a purer channel for the energy.

The ability to give a Reiki session is now in place. All that needs to be done now is the placement of hands on, or above, in the aura (energy field) of the person receiving the session with the “intention” of healing (de-stressing). The Reiki energy will begin to flow automatically with its own intelligence and knowing of where to go and what to do. The best results are to simply relax and enjoy the feelings of peace that the session brings.

Once attuned to the energy used for distance healing the process is similar. A student can do a full Reiki session by intention. They use the Distant Healing Symbol and proceed as if the person was in front of them. The energy is “sent” by intention and the results are wonderful.

Reiki can never cause harm. Because Reiki is guided by a Higher Source, or God-Consciousness, it always knows what a person needs and will adjust itself to create an effect that is appropriate. Reiki works with the system of life energy, or Ki, that flows through us. Ki flows within the physical body through pathways that are called chakras, meridian and nadis. Our aura is the field of Ki that flows around us. When this energy is in balance, it creates the ability to have good health. When part of the energy is out of balance, it is in dis-ease and we have a tendency to feel this in our physical life. By receiving a Reiki session, we are able to rebalance the energy systems and improve our health by de-stressing.

The aura is a field of energy that surrounds all living things. It is composed of many layers that extend up to 4-5 feet from the body. Because the aura is actually an extension of our physical body, it can feel the effects of any disease or stress before it is felt in the physical body. This is why it is possible to work above the body and get excellent results. There are seven main chakras that are transformers of subtle energy. They transform the universal life force energy that is always around us into the more subtle energy that our system needs to keep us healthy. Each chakra corresponds with a layer of the aura. Each brings in different frequencies of energy that are needed for either our physical or spiritual well being. The meridians are subtle energy pathways within the physical body. They contain energy points that are referred to as acupuncture or acupressure points. Each meridian is usually associated with an organ or physical system in the body. Nadis are smaller energy pathways corresponding to parts of the body that they supply the life force energy to.

Reiki is spiritual in nature, but it is not a religion. You need not be of any particular religion or of any religion at all, in order for Reiki to work. Because it is guided by God-Consciousness, it opens up a world of possibilities. Although it is spiritual in nature, it has also been proven scientifically by Kirlian Photography. By using this method of photography, the Reiki energy can be seen emanating from the palm chakras in the color of white energy with the edges of the beams being a blue/white color.
